As CSIR's "Field Marshal", Mashelkar has led from the front in protecting India's intellectual property and its rich native biodiversity.

Dr R A Mashelkar
Citation read out at the special NAL Foundation Day function held on 18 Jul 1997

National Aerospace Laboratories is privileged to honour Dr Raghunath Anant Mashelkar, Director-General, CSIR and Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, upon his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of London.

As one of India's foremost chemical engineers, Dr Mashelkar has made seminal and path-breaking contributions in polymer science and engineering and in the engineering analysis of non-Newtonian fluids. As Director of National Chemical Laboratory during 989-1995, he took the laboratory to great heights and converted it to one of the finest international chemical laboratories consistently performing to its true potential.

As CSIR's Director-General from 1995, Dr Mashelkar has played the crusading role in transforming forty national laboratories into strong and self-confident institutions of innovation and creativity, committed to generating national wealth and social good. As CSIR's "Chief Executive Officer" he pioneered the vision of Team CSIR, a cohesive, vibrant and networked edifice with a corporate culture and corporate goal. As CSIR's "Field Marshal" he led from the front in protecting India's intellectual property and its rich native biodiversity.

As NAL's very special friend, Dr Mashelkar has called us the "Kohinoor" of CSIR. On this splendid occasion today, we are delighted to salute another of India's most glittering and resplendent jewels.
