 A one week Hindi Condensed Translation Training Programme (CTTP) was organized from 17 to 21 October 2011 for CSIR-NAL employees at the KTMD Seminar Hall. This CTTP is conducted by the Central Translation Bureau  for training officers / employees engaged in translation work or associated with implementation of the Official Language Policy with graduate level knowledge of Hindi and English language. 

At the inaugural function of the Condensed Translation Training Programme Dr P S R Murthy, Sr Hindi Officer, welcomed the faculty and the participants. In his welcome address Dr Murthy requested the participants to make the sessions live and interactive.

The faculty members were Ishwar Chandra Mishra from Central Translation Bureau, Bangalore and Mr Satish Kumar Pande from Central Translation Bureau, Kolkatta. Mr Satish Kumar Pande in his introduction about the programme gave a brief outline of the CTTP and termed it as a compact programme. Mr Ishwar Chandra Mishra elaborated on why we need to conduct programmes like these and how it will impart effective knowledge of translation and implementation of Official Language Hindi to the participants.

Dr A Muthukrishnan, Sr COA in his presidential remarks said “Translation is one serious thinking process”. He also mentioned that one need not have great literary skill for working in Hindi, simple knowledge of Hindi would suffice.

The training programme was a good blend of theory and exercise session. The participants were very diligent about taking notes and participating in class.

On the concluding day a valedictory function was organized. Mr S N Singh Director, Central Translation Bureau graced the occasion. The 28 participants were presented certificates by the Chief Guest Mr S N Singh.          



Prof B S Sheshadri Memorial Lecture

Dr Bharathi Bai J  Basu, Dy Head, SED delivered the 9th Prof B S Sheshadri Memorial Lecture at Central College, Bengaluru University, Bengaluru on 14th October 2011. The title of the lecture was “Sol-gel based nanocoatings and their applications”. The memorial lecture was instituted jointly by Electrochemical Society of India (ECSI) and Dept. of Chemistry, Central College, Bengaluru University.

 Mr Venkatanarasimhaiah Shankar joined NAL in the year 1975. He had a B.E degree in Electronics & Communications from NIE, Mysore and M Tech in Instrument Technology from IISc, Bangalore. He superannuated as Sc-G on September 30, 2011 after a long stint of 36 years. He made significant contributions to fields of Experimental Structural Dynamics, Active Vibration Control (AVC) of Aerospace Structures as well as development of Smart (piezo, SMA) technology. He worked in many sponsored/externally funded technology development projects such as CAVITAS (NAL-HCL), AR & DB, AEW-TDP Aircraft (CABS), ALH Helicopter (HAL), DISMAS & NPMASS (ADA), LPSC (ISRO), MAV (ADE-NAL). Notable among his contributions are DSP based Multichannel Excitation System for GVT of ALH, in-flight electronics modules for AVC of smart (piezo) Aerospace  Structures, Electronics System for SMA Actuated Aircraft Control Surface& Indigenous MEMS based  Altimeter  Sensor for Micro Air Vehicle (MAV).

He was an extremely friendly, amicable   and cheerful person who endeared himself to his colleagues/friends. He was a member of the NAL and CSIR cricket team, donned the role of NAL wicket keeper cum batsman for a number of years. He thoroughly enjoyed whatever he did: designing power electronics systems or playing cricket. His friends will miss the cheer and warmth that he so gracefully exuded.

ISAMPE Lecture

A Lecture on Ultrasonic NDE of Aircraft Structures using Rapid scan system with Roller Probe Assembly was arranged by ISAMPE, Bangalore chapter  on 14 October 2011, at the KTMD Seminar Hall. Dr C Divakar, Chairman, Bangalore Chapter welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker.

The speaker was Mr Joseph Mclean Buckley Technology Manager and Senior Applications Engineer at Sonatest Limited in Milton Keynes, UK. Earlier to joining Sonatest he was working in Hocking NDT (now part of GE) in the area of design and installation of Eddy Current and Ultrasonic Systems. Mr Buckley has 30 years of experience in the development and application of NDT Technologies.

In his lecture on “Ultrasonic NDE of Aircraft Structures using Rapid scan system with Roller Probe Assembly” Mr Jos Buckley  briefly spoke about composites and gave an overview of Sonatest Products and Ultra sonic equipments. He described the Rapid Scan Technique and its application. Talking about the manually operated Semi Automatic Ultrasonic Rapid Scan System he informed that it can acquire data for 50 mm width and one metre length. The capability to mosaic all the captured data to form the picture of the actual structure was demonstrated.  He presented some results on composite structures.

The function concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr H V Ramachandra, Joint Secretary, ISAMPE, Bangalore Chapter.

A half day seminar on Simulation solutions for Composite Application was organized at NAL on 11 October 2011 at KTMD Seminar under the aegis of ISAMPE, ESI and NAL. Dr C Divakar, Chairman, ISAMPE Bangalore chapter welcomed the gathering. In his welcome address he said “Composite manufacturing is an important part of aerospace industry. It is important to simulate the forming process employed in manufacture of large parts”.

Mr Venugopal K R gave a brief presentation on the history, vision and overview of ESI group and its offering. In his introduction he mentioned about ESI as a pioneer and world-leading provider in virtual prototyping that takes into account the physics of materials. ESI has developed an extensive suite of coherent, industry-oriented applications to realistically simulate a product’s behavior during testing, to fine-tune manufacturing processes in accordance with desired product performance; and to evaluate the environment’s impact performance.

Dr Patrick de Luca, Product Manager, ESI Group, France made the following presentation

  • Introduction to ESI Composite Solutions
  • PAM-RTM  and its Applications
  • Material Characterization for Composites and Effect of Manufacturing on Mechanical Performance

Dr. Patrick de Luca  in his French English introduced the  ESI simulation tools for different applications and how they are used to solve real time issues. He also introduced topics like RTM, VARTM, Infusion, Autoclave (Curing & Distortion), Forming of Prepregs, Draping, Failure Analysis, Effect of manufacturing on performance, etc. He said PAM-RTM is an advanced simulation solution capable of capturing various physics involved in processes such as RTM, VARTM, VARI, CRTM, etc and can help predict the end result of the manufacturing process for given configurations with a high level of accuracy. The modeling methods & required parameters to capture various processes that can be simulated in PAM-RTM were discussed in detail. This was followed by few real time case studies and correlation studies. The importance of material testing for simulation applied to various processes (such as RTM, Forming, etc) and specific methodologies for specific properties (eg. Permeability) was briefly presented. Also, some examples of the effects of the composite parts manufacturing onto mechanical performance was presented.

The function concluded with vote of thanks by Mr S Rajagopalan, ADE, Secretary, ISAMPE Bangalore chapter.

 


 Shaastra 2011

NAL participated at the annual technical festival Shaastra 2011 of Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM). The thirteenth edition of Shaastra 2011, was held during 28 September – 2 October 2011. Shaastra 2011 was a dedicated show of spectacular display of science and technology that included competitions, symposia, lectures, video conferences, exhibitions, demonstrations and workshops.

NAL stall featured MAV flying and static models, NM5 model and large posters depicting NAL’s R&D programmes, technologies, facilities and success stories. The stall was visited by 500 enthusiastic students who evinced great interest in NAL's facilities throughout the festival.

Flying display of MAV was arranged on the 29 and 30 October 2011 by MAV team. Dr G Ramesh, Joint Head, Experimental Aerodynamics Division delivered a two hour long lecture on MAV programme at NAL.

Best Paper Award

At the CORCON 2011 the paper entitled “Polyelectrolyte-Cerium Nanocontainers  in Sol-Gel matrix as Anticorrosion Coating on AA 2024-T3 (Alclad), authored by B E Amitharani, A Srinivasan, G Yoganandan and Bharati Bai J Basu was adjudged as the best paper in the Symposium of Materials and Composites held between September 28 to October 1, 2011 at Mumbai.

The paper was presented at the conference by Dr B E Amitharani.

The International Conference on High Pressure Science and Technology (AIRAPT) was held at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai during September 25-30 2011. The last time, AIRAPT was held in India twenty years ago during 1991 and was organized by NAL. The conference was conducted in association with the International body and MRSI (Mumbai Chapter) and was sponsored by BRNS, and DRDO, India. The conference was attended by over 300 researchers from 22 countries and over 375 abstracts were selected for Presentations. The conference programme included the Bridgman award lecture, Jamieson award lecture, seven plenary talks, invited talks, oral and poster presentations.

The conference was inaugurated by Dr.R.Chidambaram Principal Scientific Adviser to the Govt. of India and Dr.S.Banerjee, Chairman AEC & Secretary DAE gave the Presidential address.

The Bridgman award was won by Prof.Eiji ito, Okayama University, Japan and he presented a lecture ‘Development of the Kawai type High Pressure Apparatus and its Applications to High Pressure Earth Science’.

The Jamieson award was presented to Dr.Timothy A Strobel of Geophysical Lab, Carnegie Institution of Washington and he presented a talk ‘Pressure Induced Compound formation in its H2S + H2’.

The highlights of the conference were – Growth of large Single Crystal diamonds (2.3 carat) by CVD at the Geophysical labs, Carnegie, Washington, Nano Polycrystalline Diamond(14.5 carat) by direct conversion of graphite to diamond  at Ehime University Japan, the presentations by Dr A R Oganov, Department of Geosciences, Physics and  Astronomy, University of New York, Stony Brook on ‘Crystal Structure Prediction and new  phenomena under pressure’ and Dynamic Compression Science by Prof.Y.M.Gupta of Institute for Shock Physics & Department of physics, Washington State University.

Regional Centenary celebrations of Civil Aviation in India

The year 2011 was declared by Ministry of Civil Aviation as the Centenary Year of Civil aviation in the country to commemorate the first commercial flight in India on 18th February 1911 that carried mails between Allahabad and Naini. 

The Regional Centenary celebrations of Civil Aviation in India was jointly organized by SIATI, NAL, HAL, DRDO etc in Bangalore on September 19, 2011. Shri Vayalar Ravi, Hon'ble Union Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs and Civil Aviation inaugurated the function. The theme of the seminar was “Strategies for Growth in Civil Aviation in the Current decade 2011 to 2021”.

 Dr Madhavan Nair (Chairman NCAD) made a presentation on the updates in the National Civil Aircraft  Program and   highlighted the crying demand for the need of new aircraft in the country and spoke about the corresponding missed opportunities.

The Speakers from various organsiations like HAL, SIATI, National Aerospace L-National Civil Aircraft Development, NAAI, DGCA, Govt of Karnataka, BIAL, Airport consultants, DRDO, GMR Group, GVK Group, IISc, IIAEM provided a bird’s eye view in their respective areas. One of the key recommendations was that Industry, Organizations and Academia need to join hands to deal with the challenges of the next decade.

Mahindra Aerospace, Tata Steel Ltd, Taneja Aerospace, Maini Aerospace, Dynamatic Technologies,Quest, Indigo, KingFisher Airlines, Jet Airways, Go Air, Air India, Airworks, HAL, GMR Group, Max Aerospace participated in the  Panel Discussions . Several important areas were discussed e.g. new aircraft, overall development of aviation infrastructure, new airports, modernization of existing ones, MRO, Air Traffic Management, Human Resources etc. Approximately 400 delegates attended the programme. The presentations, panel discussions and informal talk provided a great opportunity for knowledge networking.

It was unequivocally confirmed by all that Civil Aviation is increasingly becoming important and serves as a crucial growth engine for the growing economy of the nation. The focus areas for the   Strategies for Growth in Civil Aviation identified are technologies for New Aircraft, Next Gen Air Traffic Management Systems, ACARS, Air Ambulance, MRO.  The seminar also propagated the message that we need to continuously innovate in our technologies, products, methods and processes to be well positioned in the industry and for sustained growth. In the area of infrastructure the development of airport infrastructure growth to support aviation, networking of regional airports with metro airports are to be dealt with. It was also felt that the partnership models have to be the public private partnership enterprise. In regard to the human resources – we have to build a critical mass in aeronautics by bridging the industry-university gap and attract and retain the best talents through better recruitment policies and procedures.

A souvenir on the Centenary celebration of civil aviation was released by Shri Vayalar Ravi, Hon'ble Union Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs and Civil Aviation in the presence Shri S V Ranganath, Chief Secretary of Karnataka. The souvenir’s main focus was on the civil aviation development programme in the country.
