Dr Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India has congratulated Prof Samir K Brahmachari, DG, CSIR and CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology for the path breaking scientific achievement of successful human genome sequencing for the first time in India. Dr Sajeer Ahmed is the new Adviser (M&A) Dr Sajeer Ahmed, Head Experimental Aerodynamics Division has been nominated to function as Adviser (M&A) to Director from 1 January 2010. New Head and Deputy Head of Aerospace Electronics & Systems Division Consequent on the retirement of Dr M R Nayak, Head, Aerospace Electronics & Systems Division from 31 December 2009, Director has nominated Mr K G Venkatanarayana as Head and Mr C M Ananda as Deputy Head of the Division. #IP 900, 21 - 27 Dec 2009 Report on CPYLS Programme held during 21-22 December 2009 NAL conducted two-day CPYLS Programme during 21-22 December 2009. This was the ELEVENTH CPYLS programme conducted by NAL. The top 75 students from State, CBSE and ICSE boards were invited to NAL. The programme included lectures by eminent scientists and visits to the various Divisions to get acquainted with the R&D activities of NAL. Dr. M N Sathyanarayana, Joint Head, Knowledge and Technology Management Division (KTMD) and CPYLS Coordinator, welcomed the august gathering and Dr Ranjan Moodithaya, Head, KTMD gave a brief introduction about the CPYLS programme. This year the Chief Guest was Prof Vasant Natarajan from Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Prof Vasant has a BTech from IIT, Madras, MS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA and Ph.D from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He is working at IISc from 1993. Prof Vasant gave a very inspiring lecture on “Calling the Sun God – Ra Ra Ra! Solar Appliances in a climate changing world” – a topic of great relevance. He spoke about the green environment and the pivotal role we play to do our bit. He said there was a large potential of Solar Energy that needs to be tapped. He also emphasized on how this energy could be used in our daily lives and what we could do to strive for it. Dr Girija Gopalaratnam, Deputy Head, Flight Mechanics & Controls Division, NAL, spoke on “Landing in Low Visibility with Enhanced and Synthetic Vision”, with few interesting demonstrations. The second day of the programme was marked with an invited lecture by Mr H R Madhusudan, Scientific Officer, Jawaharlal Nehru Palentarium, Bangalore. Mr H R Madhusudana is involved in all the academic programmes of the planetarium at all levels - from Class III to Post-graduation - by way of planning the programmes as well as teaching in these programmes. He also conducts workshops for science and math teachers at various levels both for content enrichment and using creative methods of teaching. He is also involved in the physics Olympiad programmes. Mr Madhusudan spoke on “Open ended experiments in Physics”. He demonstrated a lot of simple but very interesting experiments. The students were enthralled by the presentation and enjoyed it. The young students had the opportunity to visit our R&D divisions like ACD, FRPD, STTD, FMCD, ATF, 4ft Trisonic Wind Tunnel and C-CADD (F). The valedictory function of CPYLS was arranged on 22 Dec 2009. The students thanked the management for providing them the opportunity to see some of the best facilities. Most of them also expressed that the duration of the programme should be extended. Mr Madhusudan, Dr.Ranjan M, Dr Girija Gopalaratnam and Dr M R Nayak, Adviser (M&A) answered the queries raised by the participating students. Cash prizes were distributed for the following students for posing best questions from the lectures:

Mr Dayananda G N, has been awarded D Sc Mr Dayananda G N, Scientist, National Aerospace Laboratories has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Materials Science for his thesis titled “NI TI SUPER ELASTIC SHAPE MEMORY ALLOYS FOR ENERGY DISSIPATION IN SMART SYSTEMS FOR AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS”.
